Sourced from Australian Veteran's Op shop in Boronia.
According to the reference, the history of handkerchief started in China as a sunshade for the wearer's head. A handkerchief had multiple functions depending on places, periods and cultures.
Some functions are the followings: Shroud of Turin (Christian), signal of the start of chariot races (the Roman), good luck talisman from a lady worn by knight to the back of his helmet (middle age), fashion accessories (15th century, Europe), precious possession used as dowry and inheritance, sign of nobility and wealth, secretive go-between for sending explicit messages, wardrobe enhancer (1930s), final touch for the garment, escape map for the bomber pilot in WWI &WWII, advertisement for the political campaigns, small canvas for artworks, souvenirs..
